Defra Exempt Multi Fuel Stoves

In the past it was possible to install a non Defra approved wood stove in a Smoke Control Area, as long you used only approved fuels. As of January 2022, the law will be altered and stoves that aren't approved will not be permitted to be used unless fitted with a secondary and tertiary system that can reduce their production of particulate, carbon dioxide, nitrogen oxides and organic gaseous substances.

In the case of our Defra approved stoves, they are also equipped with a mechanism which stops you from closing the top air vent all the way down as this can cause the fire to smoulder and emit smoke into your home. These stoves feature an adjustable air flow that lets you open the top DEFRA stoves vent just a little and still maintain the safety of a clean, efficient burning.

A stove that is approved by Defra can be fitted with a 5 inch chimney liner. This is important because the majority of codes require a chimney to have a minimum of 5 inches diameter.

Smoke Control Areas

If you live in a smoke-control area you'll require a DEFRA-approved stove to burn wood legally in your home. Defra Exempt Stoves & Multi Stoves Fuel

A Defra approved stove, also referred to a DEFRA multi wood burning stove or fuel, will have passed a stringent test developed by the Department for Environment, Farming and Rural Affairs (DEFRA). The UK government agency responsible to protect our natural environment, supporting agriculture and food industry and ensuring a vibrant rural economic. The tests that Defra Approved stoves must pass are designed to ensure that the appliance only produces very little smoke and grit when it is in operation.

A lot of the Defra Exempt stoves we stock at Stove Supermarket are also multi fuel stoves that will allow you to burn approved smokeless fuels as well as seasoned wood. They will often be called Defra stoves or Defra approved woodburners and they are usually abbreviated to SE.

The most modern Defra stoves for woodburning and multi-fuel come with secondary and tertiary ventilation systems that ensure that the wood is completely burned prior to leaving the chimney. Burning Other Fuels

Defra Approved Stoves are designed to burn a variety of fuels, including wood. They burn wood so efficiently that they are in compliance with strict regulations of the government for emissions when operating in smoke zones for control. They can be used in any smoke-control zone, so long as they're burning approved fuels, such as pellets, briquettes or logs. Stoves that have been approved by Defra will bear a mark with a SE' symbol that stands for Smoke Exempt.

A Defra-approved stove is different from a conventional multifuel stove in that it has secondary air vents which pre-heat air prior to entering the firebox. The pre-heated, heated air ensures that all fuel is ignited to create a cleaner burning. This also prevents the build-up of soot that can block the chimney. Defra stoves also have internal baffle plates that aid to regulate the flames and ensure an uniform heat distribution.

Using non-Defra approved stoves in areas with smoke control could result in substantial fines from the UK government's Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra). To avoid the risk of being accused of trespassing by Defra you should purchase and use a DEFRA approved stove that has been tested according to the government's strict standards.

These stoves can burn wood, or other fuels such as coal without worrying about the level of smoke they generate.
