Saab Key Programming

Saab cars built since about 1994 come with an immobilizer system based on coded keys. Adding an extra key requires an entirely new transponder and programming. This is usually done by the dealer, using a specially-designed Tech2 diagnostic tool.

It can be costly. It is recommended to always have an extra set of keys in your possession.

Transponder key

The transponder is a piece of key with an electronic chip. The chip transmits a signal when the key is placed into the ignition. The car then checks the signal to determine if it matches the one on the key. If the signals are in sync it will unlock and start. This is a great way to avoid car theft and keep your vehicle secure from thieves.

Transponder keys are an extremely popular accessory for cars, but they're not as safe as traditional keys made of metal. The metal part of the traditional key is easily cut and copied, however transponders are protected by an electronic chip that protects it. The chip contains a unique code that's programmed into a car's computer in order to identify it.

When a Saab key fob is used, the car recognizes it and allows it to turn on. However, it will only do this if the fob is unmodified and has a chip that has been programmed to match the original. The car will not start if the key is not programmed to match.

This will shield the pins from current and prevent them from being shorted. A diode allows current to only flow in one direction. It has a visual indicator, a black band, that shows the direction in which the current will flow.

A few of the tools that are available at auto parts stores -- such as the Autel MaxiIM IM608 PRO and IM508 -- may help customers in the shop, or even DIY users in some cases replace keys in the program and restore lost immobilizer data Sanabria says. The tools connect to the OBD port and automatically guide the user through the procedure, making it simpler than replacing the computer inside the vehicle.

Jump starting the battery

Most people keep a set of jumper cables in their trunks to use in an emergency, but jumping a battery on newer cars might not be the most efficient option. These vehicles are equipped with electronic devices and computers that communicate with each other. A voltage spike when the battery is connected to another can fry these components, rendering your vehicle undriveable.

Start the working vehicle and let it run for about two minutes before you connect the cables to the one that is disabled. Attach the red clip to the positive terminal of the battery that's good. (It will read "POS" or "+".) Attach the other end of the black cable to an unpainted, clean metal surface underneath the disabled vehicle's hood. An engine block is an excellent choice. The black cable is not to be connected to the negative terminal of the dead battery. This could create sparks that could ignite the gasoline inside the engine compartment.

Once the cables are connected, you should start the car and let it run for approximately five minutes. Then disconnect the cables in reverse.
