The Band Toto Asia

Toto was expanding its production facilities in the overseas market and was doing business in France, Germany, Indonesia, Korea, Taiwan, Thailand and the People's Republic of China. Toto's musical mastery is a result of their previous experiences in the music industry, as the band members were session musicians for artists such as Boz Scaggs, Steely Dan, and Seals and Crofts before starting the group. Their distinctive sound has become the norm for pop music from the 1980s, and has influenced many contemporary artists.

The album begins hard with songs such as Running Out of Time or Unknown Soldier that show the band's ability to write great AOR tunes that slowly get into your head. The album also contains jazzier, slower tracks like The Little Things and Chinatown. The album concludes with Great Expectations, a song that combines folk with distorted AOR and should sound completely wrong, but actually works wonderfully well.

After Toto IV, the band's fortunes began to wane. David Hungate left to concentrate on his solo career and the band had to go through various drummers. In 1984, Bobby Kimball left the band following drug-related charges. The band remained with Michael Porcaro, Steve Lukather and Michael Porcaro.

Despite the chaos, Toto forged ahead and released Isolation, which was not as successful as IV. The group managed to release an album that was chart-topping, Kingdom of Desire, in 1992. This album marked the end of the original Toto lineup and was also the first album to feature a new singer, Simon Phillips.

Line-up

Turn Back, the band's third studio album is a return to a traditional sextet style and an even more consistent and powerful album with a sharper edge. The more edgier sound of Turn Back was a reflection of the development of the group. Drummer Bobby Kimball's increased ability to play was evident in the vocal delivery of Joseph Williams, who had grown more confident and mature. Keyboardist David Paich's work also was more precise, sharper and less cloned earlier performances.

After touring to promote the album, the group recorded a live concert in Amsterdam which was released as a set of two CDs called Falling In Between Live on Eagle Records. A new studio album was released just a few months later and the band embarked on a world-wide tour in support of it. In this time keyboardist Greg Phillinganes filled in for Paich, and bassist David Hungate left the group to spend more time with his family.

In 1998, Paich & Lukather began looking through old tapes and demos to discover songs that hadn't been recorded before. It was completed in 2001 as a duo album called Then and Now. It was the first album in the history of the band not to include a single song with the word "A" in the title, and it also contained one previously unreleased track, "Kari-Anne".

By 2003, Toto had begun to decline in popularity. The fourth album, Old Is New, was a commercial failure and vocalist Williams was suffering from a serious laryngitis infection which hampered his singing.
