About Toto

Toto was formed in 1976 by guitarists Jeff Porcaro, David Paich (who at the time were also well-known studio musicians with Boz Scaggs) and singer/bassist Bobby Kimball. The name comes from the Latin word which means "all all-encompassing," the group was determined to explore all styles of music.

After a break of few years, Toto return with the album Fahrenheit in the year 1986. The album is an departure from the ballads on previous albums, and features some heavy rock. This was their first platinum album in North America.

During the recording process of the fifth album The group loses its manager and faces financial challenges. They decide to record a brand new album and change their name with an alternative producer. The lead singer Fergie Frederiksen leaves the band and is replaced by Joseph Williams, son of legendary film composer John Williams and 1950s actress Barbara Ruick. Joseph Williams is a natural frontman, and provides the band with a much-needed boost.

In 1999, the band release Mindfields and begins an extensive worldwide tour. After a few months in Europe they head to Japan where the shows are sold out. After a short break, Toto resumes recording and continues to record their first live album, Absolutely Live in 1993 which includes the cover of Weezer's track Hash Pipe in response to the band performing their hit song Africa on the recent tour. Toto's touring band includes drummer Lenny Castro and bassist Shannon Forrest along with keyboardist Shem Von Schroeck.

The original Toto members were joined by keyboardist Greg Tambu who filled in for Paich, and bassist David Hungate who filled in for Shem von Schroeck.

In 2008, a string lineup changes and a string of disappointing albums led Toto to break up for a few years. But, the group recommenced performing in 2012 following the release of their album, 40 Trips Around the Sun.

The album marked a return to the band's top form, and the tour that came with it featured sold-out shows in North America and Europe. Toto's reunion was bolstered by the inclusion of guitarist Steve Lukather and bassist Shem von Schroeck, who both returned to the band.
